D#3 HW#12

Reflection

This weeks assignment was a little difficult. I learned some interesting new resources but I didn't understand the citation part. I went over other classmates examples but that just confused me even more. Maybe my cold has gone to my brain or I'm just losing it. I will have to look again and see if I can figure it out and post it later. I do like the fact that I'm getting closer to choosing a topic that's important to me and I can share with my class mates. It makes the class more interesting since there are all kinds of different people with different backgrounds. There are some articles from other class mates that I can't wait to read when we are done. I am a little nervous on how I'm going to do but this is a learning experience. I feel like my course competencies are a little off since I'm not sure exactly what I was suppose to do with HW#10. I will not let this assignment defeat me I will conquer it! As for my personal life I feel like it's on the right track, had a little side track this week with my divorce being filled but only good things to come!!!

Annotated bibliography

"Quick Screening Test Developed for Alzheimer's,” The Associated Press, March 13, 1998.
This article is about a test that is said to predict who is going to have Alzheimer's by giving a picture and word test. It is said to have a 90% accuracy. I think this article is good for people who are wondering if they have Alzheimer's or believe a family might be showing signs of it.

Martin Enserink “First Alzheimer's Diagnosis Confirmed,” Science, March 27, 1998, p. 2037.
This article is about the first person with Alzheimer's who was misdiagnosed with another disorder. This would work for my topic to help prove that Alzheimer's has been around for years but has been misdiagnosed. Many people have suffered from this disease and it's nothing new just something we have to learn more about.

Susan Gettleman and Janet Markowitz, The Courage to Decide (1974).
I really hope this article is wrong. I know that divorce has an impact on children but I would hate for it to be a negative one. I would hate to think that the children would be less dependent on their parents. My parents are my biggest supporters and I want to have that relationship with my children. I want them to know I'm here for them no matter what they are going threw. I think that a divorce will have an impact on them but it's up to the parents to make sure it's not a negative one.

Judith S. Wallerstein, Julia M. Lewis and Sandra Blakeslee, The Unexpected Legacy of Divorce: A 25 Year Landmark Study (2000), p. XXIX.
This article is about a women named Janet who's in here mid 30's who has problems with relationship because of her parents divorce. I think this article could be useful to read for my study on divorce and it's effects on children. I believe that as long as the parents show their children love and are still civial with each other it's a health realtionship between them and shouldn't have a negative effect on the parents.

I'm not exactly sure what I'm suppose to be doing here. Maybe it's just me but I will go over it again to see if I can understand what exactly you want.

Techno-tip

How bad is the affect of the children of a divorce? Are my children going to be ok? Does divorce have any developmental problems on children? Am I doing the right things for my children? Are they going to be affected as adults from the choice their mother made while they were very young children.

D#3 HW#8

~What is the research question?
How does divorce affect the children of the family?

~What is the context?
Dealing with divorce and children.

~What is the purpose?
To find out how to help children from divorced famiies

~Who is the audience?
Any parent of family member who has children to worry about during a divorce.

~How do you fit into the context?
I have 2 young children and I'm going threw a divorce.

~How do the answers to these five questions affect one another and your understanding of the topic?
These questions help you stay on track. Keep you from going in a different direction so you understand exactly what you are writing about.

D#3 HW#7

Consider Audience and Purpose

1) What might your audience be interested in? How could you relate your topic to your audience's experience?
The audience may also have children from a broken home and wonder what the effects are going to be on their children as well. Or they may have a family member with Alzheimers.

2) Will this topic satisfy the purpose of your writing and research? What criteria must you keep in mind to make sure that you are meeting your writing goals?
I think one of these topics will satisfy my writing and research. I think I would be able to write a 3-4 page paper on one of the topics. I could relate to this topic since I'm going threw a divorce and my grandfather has Alzheimers. I can give my own facts as well as look up other peoples stories.

D#3 HW#6

Generate topic Ideas

1) Spend 3-5 minutes generating a list of topics that you find interesting and compelling? List 6-8 possibilities.
1) children and divorce
2) vaccines
3) pre-school
4) co-sleeping
5) health care
6) renting or leasing

2) Go through your list and phrase each topic as a question?
1) How does divorce affect the children of the family?
2) Are child vaccines really safe?
3) Is it that important to a child development to be place in pre-school?
4) Is co-sleeping appropriate?
5) How much health care coverage does some one really need?
6) What is more beneficial renting or leasing a house?

3) Now look at your list of questions and choose one that sounds particularly interesting to you. Free write for 5 minutes on why you thing this topic is interesting and what you know about it.
~Is co-sleeping appropriate? I think this topic is interesting to me because I let my children co-sleep with me. In some cultures it's normal for their children to sleep in the same bed as the parents. Doctors don't have a problem with you co-sleeping as long as your aware the child is in bed with you. The bond I believe children and their parents is stronger. Convenient for breast feeding mothers.

4) Look at your free writing and highlight or underline the most interesting idea you came up with. Copy that idea below your free writing and write about that idea for the next 5 minutes.
Convenient for breast feeding mothers.
As a breast feeding mother I found it not only convenient but helped build the bond between me and my children by co-sleeping. I don't think there's anything wrong with having your children in your bed. I know in some cultures it's a very normal thing and here in the states a lot of people look down on it.

D#3 HW#5

1) What's important to you?
divorce and the effects on a child, education, vaccines, child care, alzheimer

2) What discussions (in writing, on the internet, verbally)engage you and other members of the community?
the swine flu, autism associated with vaccines, pregnancy, the growth of a baby in the womb, alzheimer

3) What events or experiences have happened that you still remember and that life you or other members of the community with questions or concerns?
receiving drugs during birth, taking medications while pregnant, breast cancer, Alzheimer

4) What problems or concerns exist in this particular community?
There are a lot of medical conditions out in the community that effect different people. I would like to know more on Alzheimer.

5) Who, which individuals and groups, is involved in this discussion, event, or problem? Why are they involved?
My family is in the discussion on Alzheimer my grandfather was diagnosed two years ago. Since then my family has been doing research on the internet and thew several doctors to see if there's anything we can do to help slow down the deterioration of his brain/memory

6) When and where did/does the discussion, event, or problem take place?
Mostly in elderly people

7) What exactly is the topic of the discussion, event, or problem?
Alzheimers

8) Why is the discussion, event, or problem significant to the community members?
As people get older you never know if your family members will come down with Alzheimers. It's then that you realize that you want to know about it. I think that everyone should learn about it so you have the signs to looks for.

9) How does the community usually start to resolve the discussion, event, or problem?
There have been many studies on Alzheimers and there are even medications that you can take to try to slow the process but as of now there's no cure for it.

Identify Kairos?

What is your motivations for doing this research and writing? Course Assignment and grades? Interest in topic? Need to do /change something in your life?
My motivation for doing this research paper is a mixture of things. Of course I wan to get a good grade but I also want to get some more information on the topic that pertains to me and my life.

What is going on around you that affects your understanding of this research project and topic? School? Work? Home? Community?
At this point in time the things that are effecting me are a divorce in progress, I'm a full time student and mother. I'm going to have to find a job to support me and my kids.

What has happened in the past and present, and what might happen in the future, that affects your understanding of this research project and topic? The topic that I'm thinking of right now is how divorce affects children. I come for a home with both parents and now that I'm going threw a divorce I'm not sure how that is going to effect my children. I want to learn all I can to hope prepare them for what might come their way. I need to understand how to talk to them and comfort them in every way.

D#3 HW#3

What did you like about it? How does it fit wp#1 assignment prompt? If you were going to revise this to submit for wp#1, what would you change? Why?

I like this article since I'm a mother of two and did breast feed my children. I have several friends who have young children too and they had problems breast feeding their children. I can completely understand why she felt so much pressure to breast feed. It is very hard to do in the beginning and some women just have so many problems getting the child to latch on right. I think that she has meet all the requirements for WP#1. The article is 3-4 pages long, she discusses why she is doing research and writing and gives her perspective on the topic as of right now.

D#2 HW#8 Reflection

The assignments this week have helped me not feel so lost. The techniques that you read about to help you figure out what topic to pick and how to find it were great. I haven't had an English class in so many years I loved all the websites that we had to look at to help us correct our problems. Therefore making it easier for me to try to correct my work before turning it in by doing a little research on things I may have questions on. I now know where my week points are but I also know how to improve them. I feel a little more at easy knowing new strategies on how to write a paper and do more proper research for this class.

D#2 HW#7 Grammer Assignment

(Original)
Hello Everyone,
My name is Lorraine Schmidt, I'm 31 years old, a mother of two under two, I'm also a wife, sister and a daughter. I've been married for 3 years and live in phoenix. I served my country in the navy from OCT01-JUL05. I worked on F-14A Tomcats, for those of you who don't know what F-14's are just think of top gun. I have been around the world and met so many wonderful people. Granted we worked 12 hour days 7 days a week but I believe it was the best job I've ever had until motherhood. After being in so many different countries I'm interested in learning more about them. I love watching movies and I figured this would be a great way to learn more about other cultures. I've researched some of the movies on netflix and blockbuster online. After looking over the websites I've decided to go with netflix since they have some of the movies online and I can be viewed immediately. I do like the fact that with blockbuster you can exchange your movies at the store. The only problem with that is you don't know if they are going to have the next movie you need in the store. Another down fall with blockbuster was that they also do have all the movies we will be watching but they have a very long wait on them. Since this class has a time schedule I can't be waiting to see if I'm going to get the next movie in time to critique it. I wish everyone the best of luck with the class it seems like it will be a blast!

I served my country in the navy from OCT01-JUL05. I worked on F-14A Tomcats, for those of you who don't know what F-14's is just think of Top Gun.

I do like the fact that with Blockbuster you can exchange your movies at the store. The only problem with that is you don't know if they are going to have the next movie you need in the store. What I learned from the websites:

After having my family and friend review this introduction I was told that I need to learn when to make a new paragraph and when to capitalization. After viewing http://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/ I now pay attention to the capitalization to words. I didn't realize that just changing the first letter of a word could make such a difference. I also used website http://owl.english.purdue.edu/ to help me with paragraphs and how to transition from one to the other. To fix my errors I made a couple of different paragraphs so everything was combined in one. I also went through and capitalized all the names to businesses and cities.

3) How have you conducted research before?
The most research that I had to conducted was on the internet to enroll in BIO181. I'm trying to get into the nursing program and needed to get into a BIO class. Since I have two young children I have to go to school at night so I can have my parents watch them. So I had to do some research and see what BIO I could get into with evening classes. I original enrolled into BIO160 but realized that wasn't a pre-req so I had to drop and switch to BIO181 in a matter of hours. So I went on the computer looked up all the BIO181 classes at all locations and the only one I could find was BIO181 at Red Mountain. I had to consider the time since there is a lab and I wouldn't be getting out of class till 10pm and it's a 45 min drive for me. I talked to my parents about the course and time to make sure it wouldn't be a burden for them. They agreed to watch the children so I could take this pre-req even though it was so far away. After being in the class now for a week I'm very satisfied that I was able to get in and that it wasn't a burden for my parents to watch my kids. I truly am thankful to such wonderful family!

4)How do research processes compare?
Academic research I believe you go more into depth with. Normally if you are just trying to do research for yourself there's less work put into detail. I know in the past when I have done academic research I'm not sure exactly what my instructor wants or needs from me so I make sure I get every detail possible. Where if it's for leisure then I will just look up the answer on the computer.

5)How do rhetorical situations compare?
I was motivated to do the research so I could hopefully get into the nursing program. I only had a day to try to get into a class since school had already started. My audience was my parents since they would be watching my kids for me. I had to take in consideration that they would be up for about 18 hrs to watch the kids if I got a later class.

6)What are your writing idiosyncrasies?
I often use run on sentences. I like to use the words I, you, but and the word and to get my point across. I haven't had a writing class in over 10 years so I don't have any previous work to look at. These are the things that just come to mind right now.
